From the Windows NT-based (Windows XP and 7 specifically) command prompt, how can I get the serial number of a hard drive as a variable? The one I'm looking at is the serial number of the physical hard disk drive

How do I reformat my machine if I don’t have a Windows CD? And it took about a half day to get my laptop reformatted and then up and running again with a fresh. Step 2: Reinstall. Reinstall Windows. If you used Windows setup to reformat your machine as described above you’re already on your way. Reinstall and reconfigure all the applications you use. I’ve focussed on having the Windows CD, but the same actually applies to the setup CDs for any software on your machine. If you have a Windows 7-era PC, there’s a good chance the PC’s key is a single key the manufacturer uses for all their PCs. Thanks to “System Locked Pre-installation,” you’re. No F key reformats the computer. You need to use the restore disk that either you made or came with your computer. Or in the event you have a PC that does this then use the reformat partation on your hard drive. The computer will do the rest of the work. Overturn your EeePC. There will be a sticker with with the Serial Number (SN:). That is your serial number. But if like mine, with time, the Serial Number on my EeePC has disappeared, then what?! Instead of my Serial Number, the sticker has become blank! Shame on you Asus for using disappearing ink for the serial number.

In the same vein as Moab's answer, but using PowerShell this time:
This command gets an instance of the
Win32_DiskDrive WMI class and outputs the model of each disk drive in the computer and its corresponding serial number from that instance.
This answer assumes PowerShell 3.0 or later. If running an older version, use
Get-WmiObject in place of Get-CimInstance .
On Windows 8 and later, you can also use this command:
